History
Established in 1992, Dutch Henry Winery is a small family-owned
and operated winery in Napa Valley. The Chafen family takes great
pride in caring for and nurturing all aspects of the winery and vineyards.
Less and Maggie Chafen have grown grapes in Napa Valley for nearly
20 years. Their son, Scott Chafen oversees the daily operations of
Dutch Henry Winery.
Less is a Bay Area radiologist, specializing in nuclear medicine and
breast imaging technology.
Born in Texas and raised in Virginia, Less brings an intellectual
sensibility to the winery and keeps a keen eye on the financial well-being
of winery operations. He is devoted to the vineyards that are the
foundation of Dutch Henry wines.
Maggie is the arbiter of style at Dutch Henry. She owns Dottie Doolittle
in San Francisco where the best dressed children take their parents
to shop. A California native and Master Gardener, Maggie is famous
for hosting elegantly casual gatherings at their St. Helena hillside
retreat, Northfork Ranch. Her cuisine features freshly harvested produce
and estate olive oil from her gardens and orchards. Vineyard
Information
All of Dutch Henry's Chafen vineyards are located in the
northeast quadrant of the Napa Valley AVA, where the dominant visual
backdrop is provided by the dramatic Palisades, formed by volcanism
and seismic uplifting.
The winery block is situated along the renowned Silverado Trail. The
original stagecoach trail actually runs through the winery property.
This vineyard is just under two acres in size and planted to Syrah
from the Estrella River clone.
This clone is notable for aromatic black fruit with notes of spice.
The soils here, primarily sand underlain with fourteen percent rock,
silt and clay, coupled with an inexplicable "hot-spot" effect
of the situs, are prime conditions for the varietal.
About two miles to the south and east along North Crystal Springs
Road, is the vineyard that Scott Chafen calls the "jewel in the
crown." Chafen Vineyards is nestled along the southwestern-facing
slopes of the Vaca mountain range and overlooks the entire eastside
of the valley. Comprising two vineyards situated at 800 and 1200 feet
elevations, Chafen Vineyards is planted to a total of twenty two acres
of Cabernet Sauvignon in a variety of clones, including Clones 4,
8, 15, 337 and See, as well as Petite Verdot. The soils here are up
to thirty percent rock, overlain with sand and volcanic veins, providing
optimal drainage and restraining the vines just enough to bring about
concentrated flavors.

2006 Napa Valley Pinot Noir
1 open bottle of Pinot plus 2 salmon filets plus 1 Garlic Rosemary
DH olive Oil marinade minus 2 pair of shoes equals 2 very happy
people. Gotta love new math. Our Napa Valley Pinot Noir fits into
many equations that end in well being. Grown in the Mt. Veeder appellation
at about 1700 feet above the valley floor, these grapes enjoy a
cool long growing season unique to a mountain appellation. Fresh
with brilliant strawberry fruit and spice on the finish, this wine
is the perfect compliment to the likes of duck breast, turkey with
cranberry, and of course grilled Salmon/Steelhead. The wine aged
8 months with 30% new French oak. $48/750ml. (Club $38.40)
2004 Napa Valley Argos
A nice, cool evening, a bright glow in the fireplace, warm aromas

for aging. $44/750 ml. (Club $35.20)
2002 Napa Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Hide the women and children because the Yeti of Cabs is down from
Howell Mtn. Grab some t-bones and fire up the grill. Go heavy on

cherry with a hint of clove in the bouquet. The wine finishes with
black pepper and dried herbs. This is a good candidate for your
cellar. $48/750 ml. bottle(Club $38.40).
