History
In 1982 Bill Frazier purchased 15 rolling acres of land on
the east side of Napa where he built a home for his family and decided
to settle down. In 1990, Bill planted 9.5 acres of Cabernet and Merlot
grapes on two opposing hillsides below his residence. At the time,
Cabernet Sauvignon was not routinely planted this far south in the
valley. Recent years had seen Merlot come of age in the Carneros region,
just southwest of the Frazier Estate. The Merlot being grown in this
cool region was particularly elegant, with great finesse and backbone,
in addition to rich fruit. This young success influenced Bill Frazier's
thinking and is what led him to take a risk, planting both Cabernet
and Merlot in his east Napa location.
Currently, Bill is not the only Frazier involved in the Frazier Winery
operation. His daughter Kim heads up the marketing and operations
at the winery while his son Jon is the vineyard manager, working alongside
John Gibson to ensure optimum vine growth and fruit production.
Vineyard Information
The Frazier Estate is perched high on a hill in the Coombsville
area of the Napa Valley. In 2006 this area of Napa, previously under
the broad Napa Valley AVA, was submitted to the TTB for consideration
as its own unique appelation. This new area would be called Tulocay
and at this time is still pending approval.
In 1998 Bill purchased the neighboring 46 acres and began a second
planting. Completed in 1998, this new block of 11 acres contains Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. As the science
of viticulture evolves planting decisions become both more complex
and more significant. The issue of matching site to rootstock and
scion wood becomes increasingly important in the quality of resulting
fruit. For the new planting owner Bill Frazier, winemaker John Gibson,
and noted viticulture consultant Rex Geitner chose 101-14 and 3309
as rootstocks for this site, Cabernet clones 337 and 15, Merlot clone
181, Petit Verdot clone 2 and Cabernet Franc clones 312 and 332. The
first crop from this new block was harvested in 2000.
In 2007 Bill ripped 10 acres of land for a new vineyard project that
will be planted in 2008. In addition, he decided to replant 1 acre
of a Merlot block planted in 1990 that was not performing to expectations.
With the cooler conditions in the southeast portion of the vineyard
it was determined that Chardonnay would be well suited for the climate
and soil profile. This planting marks a milestone for Frazier as this
Chardonnay will be the first white wine produced by Frazier Winery.
About The Wines
Started in 1997, we produce a Cabernet and a Merlot under
the Lupine Hill Label.
2004 Lupine Hill Cabernet Sauvignon $30
Aging in a combination of French and American oak barrels, has mellowed
the 2004 Lupine Hill Cabernet Sauvignon to become a very approachable
and lively wine. It is ruby red in color and exhibits the aromas
for fresh cherries and cranberries. The flavors of strawberries,
raspberries, with herbs and surrounded by toasty oak. It is the
perfect pairing wine for cheeses, grilled meats, and chocolate desserts.
2004 Lupine Hill Merlot $25
Utilizing fruit from both our younger and older vineyard blocks,
the 2004 Lupine Hill Merlot is a softer and more supple version
of the Frazier Family Estate Merlot. This does not mean it is lacking
in fruit or character. The fresh aromas and flavors of cherries
and strawberries are complemented by cedar, vanilla, and oak shadings.
It is a perfect wine for sipping while cooking or enjoy with spring
and summer picnic fare.

perfect harmony between the presence of fruit, intensity, and oak
to create a wine that will each for easily over a decade.
