History
For more than 20 years, Gloria Ferrer Caves & Vineyards—the
first sparkling wine house in the Sonoma Carneros region—has
invited visitors to discover cool-climate wines served with warm
Spanish hospitality.
Owned by the Ferrer family, whose wine experience is rooted in 19th
century Spain, our winery is a vibrant blend of Catalan and California
mission design. We cultivate fruit for our premium quality sparkling
and still wines in our 335 acres of estate vineyards distinguished
by warm days, cool nights, summer fog and a long growing season
that coaxes grapes to maturity slowly and consistently, with balanced
sugar and acidity. Our Vineyard Manager Mike Crumly and Winemaker
Bob Iantosca, both of whom have worked for Gloria Ferrer from its
inception, have devoted more than two decades to identifying the
diverse soil types, microclimates and specific needs of every vine
in their care.
STILL INSPIRED
In 1991, inspired by the quality and character of our estate fruit,
we began crafting still wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In
subsequent years, our winegrowing team meticulously matched dozens
of clones to the diverse growing conditions in our estate vineyards
with their sights on the highest quality grapes with more intense
flavors and characteristics. As pioneers of sparkling wine-based
clonal research, we have studied more than 40 different clones to
date. Today, this longtime and dynamic relationship of discovery
with the land is revealed in balanced wines of earth and opulence.
Gloria Ferrer is located in the picturesque Sonoma Carneros region,
40 miles northwest of San Francisco. Our winery’s sun-drenched
Vista Terrace overlooks breathtaking estate vineyards—providing
the perfect place to enjoy a glass of sparkling or still wine with
the savory Spanish and local cheeses, meats, almonds and other delicacies
that are available from our tasting room.
Vineyard Information
At Gloria Ferrer, our wines are distinguished by a commitment
to the highest quality, cool-climate Carneros fruit nurtured in
hand-tended vineyards that are thinned for low yields of flavorful
grapes.
We cultivate fruit for our premium quality sparkling and still wines

climate is defined by warm days, cool nights, summer fog and a long

Our 207-acre Home Ranch Estate Vineyard, planted to Chardonnay and
Pinot Noir, is comprised of nine distinct blocks, the elevations
of which range from 50 to 325 feet. Just south of the estate, our
128-acre Circle Bar Ranch is comprised of 13 blocks, planted to
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and small blocks of Merlot and Syrah.
The diversity of growing conditions within our two vineyard properties
allows us to plant vineyards with particular wines in mind. While
the Circle Bar Ranch has well-drained soils, perfect for the cultivation
of intensely flavorful red wines, blocks of the Home Ranch vineyard
are rich in clay, which holds water and slowly releases it to the
vines, creating ideal conditions for sparkling wines of elegant
fruit and no tannic bitterness.
About The Wines
2003 Blanc de Blancs $24
The bouquet of the 2003 Blanc de Blancs is reminiscent
of ripe pineapple and toasted biscuit, underscored by a distinctive
citrus blossom note. Juicy pear, white chocolate and lemon zest
flavors fill the palate, which expand through the wine’s vivacious
stream of bubbles and firm structure.
2000 Royal Cuvee $32
The Royal Cuvée is a prestige bottling that showcases the
superb quality of the grapes grown on our 335-acre Carneros Estate
vineyard. Its style combines delicacy and exuberant fruit with nearly
five years of aging on the yeast, which imbued the wine with a range
of complex sparkling wine characteristics.
The lion’s share of the wine (65%) is comprised of Pinot Noir,
which supplies finesse and red fruit. Chardonnay rounds out the
blend, contributing longevity and a lively acidity.
2004 Brut Rose $42
The Carneros Brut Rosé appears to be lit from within, exhibiting
a brilliant salmon color and an endless stream of minute bubbles.
Vibrant aromas of wild strawberry, rosehip and citrus mark the bouquet
while the palate displays a crisp blood orange character and lemon
flavors in the finish.
1997 Carneros Cuvee $50
The 1997 Carneros Cuvée is a striking wine with bright, exotic
fruit elements held together by an elegant, contoured structure.
Asian pear, kiwi and ginger aromas flood the bouquet, with a subtle
toast element shading the background. The palate is filled with
mandarin and pineapple flavors, held aloft by an array of miniscule
bubbles.
2006 Carneros Pinot Noir Rose $15
A brilliant, pink color with streaks of salmon throughout. Aromas
of fresh raspberry, citrus and antique rose mark the bouquet while
the palate displays a blood orange character (cherry/citrus) and
wild strawberry flavors in the crisp, lengthy finish.
2005 Carneros Chardonnay $18
Ripe mango aromas are intermingled with Meyer lemon and caramel
elements in the bouquet. Explosive pineapple, golden delicious apple
and toast flavors are enveloped in a textural richness, which is
beautifully offset by the wine’s ample acidity.
2001 Jose S. Ferer Chardonnay $14
Distinctive aromas of citrus and green apple are laced with subtle
honey/toffee notes. The flavors echo the bouquet, while the supple
mid-palate is balanced by a substantial framework of acidity.
2004 Carneros Merlot $19
The 2004 Merlot displays aromas of black cherry, currant and dark
chocolate, with sweet herbal notes shading the background.
The palate entry is supple and filled with blackberry, black walnut
and cocoa flavors that extend through integrated tannins and a long
finish. Approachable now, this Merlot will benefit from further
cellaring for five to ten years.
2003 Carneros Syrah $19
Deep garnet in color, this Syrah reveals complex aromas and flavors
of damson plum, boysenberry, sweet black licorice and toffee. The
palate is vivid and the texture lush, displaying polished tannins
amid a long finish.
2005 Carneros Pinot Noir $28
As is always the case, the 2005 is a study in red fruit and earth.
The aromas first display Bing cherry, rose petal and pomegranate,
then open to wood spice, mocha and a complex dried leaf note. The
palate is both silky and delineated, with an ample core of bright
red fruit and autumn spice flavors that echo the nose.
2003 Gravel Knob Pinot Noir $40
Initially the bouquet opens with black plum, lilac and autumn leaf
aromas; traces of smoke and toast notes emerge in the background.
On the palate, one finds plum, wild cherry and forest floor flavors,
enveloped in an expansive, lush texture.
2003 Rust Ruck Terrace Pinot Noir $40
In the bouquet, one finds aromas of black raspberry liqueur and
pomegranate, then warm spice and cocoa emerge into view. The palate
is at once silken and structured, conveying plum, ripe berry and
toffee flavors through an extended finish.
